Department of Chemical Engineering
The fundamental concept of Chemical Engineering is based on the processing of raw feedstock into valuable products used in daily life i.e. fuel for transportation, fertilizer for agro-industry, food processing, clean water production, cement for the construction industry and much more. Development of such products involves the application of engineering knowledge to develop the cost-effective, optimized and energy-efficient processing approach. Chemical Engineers learn and apply the basic and advanced engineering concepts of process and equipment designs, cost estimation, process control and optimization for the transformation of pilot-scale projects to large scale industrial processes. Graduates of Chemical Engineering have exciting opportunities in i.e. R&D, processing, quality, environmental and health safety in national and multinational organizations. Chemical Engineers equipped with knowledge of the latest technology for process plant design can offer consultancies to the industries to get maximum profit via optimized processing.
The BS Chemical Engineering program was started in September 2005 with just four faculty members and fourteen students under the umbrella of Faculty of Engineering at Takatu Campus with high spirit and expectation to produce Chemical Engineering graduates as a trained human resource for national and international processing industries. Today, the Chemical Engineering Department has twenty-one faculty members; most of them are foreign qualified from the best universities in the world. The department has a growing, vibrant, research-oriented faculty who take great pride in research and education. The department has various state of the art laboratories, where students and faculty are engaged in cutting edge research in the field of Nanotechnology, Algal cultivation, Biomass and bioenergy, Waste management for recovery of valuable products, Wastewater treatment and Polymer composites. Currently, the Department is offering BS and MS program in Chemical Engineering.
Moreover, collaboration with industries, the major stakeholders, will strengthen regarding research. The team at the department is also working on a collaboration with international researchers from world-leading institutes to share the knowledge of research areas of their interest.
Vision
To be among the leading Chemical Engineering Department of the country with programs providing quality graduates for the chemical and allied industry with focus on the research and development.
Mission

Program Educational Objectives
The department of Chemical Engineering at BUITEMS envisions to produce chemical
engineers who will:
- Professional competency in chemical engineering to address the needs of the chemical and allied industries, research and development sector.
- Contribute to the solution of industrial problems, technological and societal issues.
- Pursue professional development and technical achievement through continuing education.
Program Learning Outcomes
The Chemical Engineering program prepares students to attain the educational objectives
by ensuring that students demonstrate achievement of the following expected outcomes:...
- Engineering Knowledge: An ability to apply
mathematics, science and engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialization
to the solution of complex computer engineering problems.
- Problem Analysis: An ability to identify,
formulate, and analyze complex computer engineering problems and to be able to
acquire substantiated conclusions using principles of computer engineering, natural
sciences and engineering sciences.
- Design/Development of Solutions: An ability to
design solutions for complex computer engineering problems and design systems,
components or processes that meet specified needs with appropriate consideration for
public health and safety, cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
- Investigation: An ability to investigate complex
engineering problems in a methodical way including literature survey, design and
conduct of experiments, analysis, and interpretation of experimental data, and
synthesis of information to derive valid conclusions.
- Modern Tool Usage: An ability to create, select and
apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools,
including prediction and modeling, to complex engineering activities, with an
understanding of the inherent limitations.
- The Engineer and Society: An ability to apply
reasoning informed by contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal
and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to professional
engineering practice and solution to complex engineering problems.
- Environment and Sustainability: An ability to
understand the impact of professional engineering solutions in societal and
environmental contexts and demonstrate knowledge of and need for sustainable
development.
